Favorite Web Tools

For collaborating in the classroom:

Diigo – All-in-one research tool meets social bookmarking. Highlight, annotate, and archive digital resources. Download the toolbar and actively read/engage any digital resource on the Internet. Students can collect and share their digital annotations! (I’ve created a “district” account for a free upgrade to the “educator” status on Diigo - code is 7722). Here’s my page on Diigo.

Collaborize Classroom - Structured online discussion platform- perfect for extending conversations beyond the walls of the physical classroom to give every student a voice.

Edmodo or My Big Campus - similar to a Facebook, but for educational purposes.

Blogger - Easy to create blogs with the ready-made templates on Blogger (and it syncs to your Woodridge Gmail account!). An all-in-one hub for students to collaborate and contribute to the learning process. Check out some great examples created by staff in the district here: sample 1, sample 2, sample 3, sample 4, sample 5.

Google Sites - A presenter from ISTE and BLC, Catlin Tucker, uses Google Sites as the platform that her students use to create Digital Portfolios. Here’s a link to her blog post on Digital Portfolios which features many samples of her students’ work: http://goo.gl/eWirX1

For “flipping” your classroom/posting videos of notes:

Educreations - Record lectures to flip your teaching. Upload images and use drawing tools to record a tutorial for students!

Screencast-O-Matic: One-click screen capture recording... record audio and video of what you’re doing on your computer screen and save it as a video for others to view!

Tools for feedback:

Google Forms - This application through Google Drive can be used in so many different ways, but teachers can use it daily as an entry or exit slip.
A great way to take Google Forms a step further is to use a Form Emailer - this allows you to send individual results AND your feedback to student email addresses - or even parents! (Here’s Catlin Tucker’s tutorial on this: http://goo.gl/0fCbBI)

Remind101 – Send text message reminders to students; stay connected to parents. One way communication from teacher to students and parents.

Google Voice - Allow user to create one free phone number through Google - never attaches to your actual phone number and can send and receive texts, voicemails, and phone calls. Messages can be emailed to you, heard OR read from the web, or sent as a message to your actual phone
(advanced use with using Google Voice for Podcasting: http://goo.gl/LxKLSB).

Socrative - A smart student response system that empowers teachers to engage their classrooms through a series of educational exercises and games via smartphones, laptops, and tablets

Creating better Google searches:

A Google A Day - A series of complicated questions set up like a game that cannot be “googled” simply. Place students in teams - have to do multiple searches to find the answer. When they start there’s a timer - creates sort of a race/challenge and refines their searching ability.

Google Advanced Search Operators - Cheat sheet for how to Google Search correctly. Just think of how much better student searches would be if they knew how to search the right way!

Creating a PLN (Professional Learning Network)

Twitter - Fastest way to reach out globally and on the go to others w/in our profession. Creating a professional Twitter account allows you not only to stay up to date with best practices, but you can also use it as a bridge to communicate out to others all of the amazing things going on in your classroom!

Educade - a free website that pairs standards aligned lesson plans with 21st century teaching tools like games, apps, and maker kits. They also have a blog: http://blog.educade.org/

Making Curriculum Pop - A social network of sorts for teachers created by Ryan Goble.
